Lumbini Lions Vs Biratnagar Kings | Hope Alive for Playoff
Lumbini Lions Keep Playoff Hopes Alive With Third Win, Down Biratnagar Kings by 5 Wickets

The Lumbini Lions strengthened their charge toward the NPL playoffs with an impressive five-wicket victory over the Biratnagar Kings on Wednesday at the Tribhuvan University International Cricket Ground in Kirtipur. The win marks Lumbini’s third triumph of the season, keeping them firmly in the playoff race as the league enters its decisive phase.
Biratnagar Set a Fighting Total
After losing the toss, Biratnagar Kings were asked to bat first and managed to post 144 for 8 in their 20 overs. Their innings was held together by Lokesh Bam, who made a steady 35 off 42 balls. Momentum came in bursts from Bashir Ahamad (28 off 19) and Australian import Sam Heazlett (27 off 20), both of whom tried to push the scoring rate in the middle overs.
However, Lumbini’s bowling group kept the Kings on a tight leash throughout the innings. Youngster Sher Malla was the standout performer, claiming 3 wickets for 25 runs in a smart, disciplined spell that troubled the Biratnagar batters. Support came from the rest of the attack, ensuring the Kings never completely broke free despite having wickets in hand.
D’Arcy Short Leads a Confident Chase
Chasing 145, Lumbini Lions approached the target with composure. Opener D’Arcy Short was once again at his fluent best, crafting a stylish 57 off 44 balls with six boundaries and two sixes. His assured presence at the top laid the perfect platform for the Lions.
Sundeep Jora chipped in with a brisk 24 off 15, keeping Lumbini ahead of the required rate. When the match entered its final stretch, experienced Sri Lankan batter Niroshan Dickwella guided the innings home with an unbeaten 29 off 22 balls, ensuring Lumbini crossed the line with 14 balls to spare at 145 for 5.
For Biratnagar, captain Sandeep Lamichhane picked up two wickets and bowled with customary control, while Subhas Bhandari also claimed a pair. But defending a total under 150 on a good batting track proved too tall an ask.
Playoff Race Tightens
The victory gives Lumbini a valuable boost in the points table, taking them to six points and keeping their playoff aspirations alive. With momentum building at the right time, the Lions will feel confident heading into their remaining fixtures.
Biratnagar, despite the loss, remain in the playoff conversation with eight points from six matches, but the defeat will surely put added pressure on their upcoming games as the league stage nears its conclusion.
Sher Malla: Player of the Match
For his crucial three-wicket haul that swung the first innings in Lumbini’s favour, Sher Malla was deservedly named Player of the Match.
A Crucial Win for the Lions
This was a performance that showcased Lumbini’s growing balance as a side — incisive bowling, a composed chase, and leadership from their overseas players. With the league heating up, this win could prove pivotal in their quest for a playoff berth.
